Unearthed.

We snuggled into the cold brick wall, where the air bit our pale, over exposed skin tightening around our cheekbones. The shops where busy, but the roads were scarce and covered in frost. We clung to the outside of each other’s padded jackets, the damp materials rustling together as our arms entwined. I could hear her breathing. I found that once I let go of the muscles in my body, I was also out of breath from running. It took us a moment to check our surroundings, before her wintry blue eyes met mine, and then she broke into a relieved smile, looking about herself again.

“We did it Josephine, we did,” she spoke in a voice that was almost a whisper, and I wrapped my arms further around her thick green coat, feeling around her pockets.

“Where is it?” I nearly growled, but keeping my voice low.

“In my pocket.”

I pushed my hands into both her pockets as she clung to my waist. She was still breathing heavily and her eyes were glazed over with a mischievous excitement. I pulled it out, a small clasp purse from her pocket, stepping back and staring at the object in my gloved hand. It was small with a chipped clasp and made from worn cotton, which as far as the eye could tell would have used to have been a dark shade of pink. There was a printed pattern of leaves and flowers covering the surface of the fabric.

She snatched it out of my hand.

“Come on!” She grinned, “Let’s split it.” She keenly pulled open the clasp with her clumsy thick gloved fingers, and then hastily she pulled out a worn five pound note with a bunch of coins. I stared helplessly on. She held the coins out to me.

“It could have been better.” I stated flatly.

“It could.” She said lightly, dropping the purse onto the ground. It landed in the corner, in a small puddle of water, next to the bricks. My eyes remained fixed to it, as I watched the freezing water of the puddle soaking slowly through the cotton. I was beginning to feel the cold. “…but thanks anyway,” she said. She turned slowly to leave the alleyway.

“Sheryl, wait.” My eyes widened, and I reached towards her. “Get your coat off, and your hat.”

Quickly she pulled off her coat and hat, whilst pocketing her five pound prize. She threw her bundled coat at me with the hat and I caught them.

“Oh, yeah, I forgot.” She said, walking out into the bitter cold air with no coat, and no hat, leaving me to myself and the bunch of coins. I stood rock solid for what seemed like a long moment after she had left, then for a second time I let go of my breath, my back sliding down the wet old wall until I reached the bottom. I sat on the floor. No doubt Sheryl would be running by now, I could see the excitement sparking like electricity behind the pale bubbly glare in her eyes before she left. I knew the adrenaline was creeping under her skin. It wasn’t the first time she had ever mugged someone. It was for me. That meant I would be the one sat here in this cold alleyway for the next three hours until dark, until the coast was clear. I held her coat and hat in my lap.

“Just as we had discussed,” I stated to myself.

And I did, just as we had discussed.
