I looked at myself in the wardrobe mirror in my chosen outfit for tonight and felt the tiny evidence of butterflies forming in the pit of my stomach as Rose came bouncing out of the bathroom, hair immaculately curled, pinned and just as bouncy as her walk. At that exact same second Darcy came through the door, books held tightly in her arms and smiling to herself in a dreamy way which I caught wind of immediately.

“What’s up with you?” she asked Rose in an amused expression, opening her trunk and neatly stacking her books in their rightful piles (she’s a neat freak, enough said!). I walked over to where she was knelt, kneeling beside her on the pretence of studying her Arithmancy textbook.

“She’s excited about the party, and I could ask you the exact same question,” I added in an undertone as Rose pranced over to the wardrobe mirror and began rummaging eagerly through its contents. Darcy’s smile was immediately wiped off her face as a rosy pink flush became very noticeable on her olive cheeks. She didn’t answer me straight away but continued to sift through the belongings neatly stacked and folded in her trunk, unable to make eye contact. “Darcy,” I persisted. “Did anything happen down there that I ought to know about?” Her head snapped up at this, a defiant look on her face.

“Oh god! No, nothing like that. I helped him with the Potions and-”

“Morgan, can I borrow your black boots?” Rose called from the depths of the wardrobe.

“Sure!” I called back, not taking my eyes off Darcy. “Go on,” I added to her.

“-and then we were just talking for a while about everything – and I mean everything! Then he went quiet for a bit and I just left him to it, because we’d been talking about what’d happened between his dad and….and You-Know-Who so it might’ve affected him, and was about to get up to join you guys when he suddenly said, “You’re an amazing person Darcy.” So I said “Woah, what brought this gratitude on, I’m helping you out because I don’t want you to fail Potions, I’m not saving your life!” and he said that….what was it again?....he said “No really, you are. I know sometimes we don’t always see eye-to-eye on things but you’re always there for me like now and I really value our relationship. You’re so special to me.” Then he just got up, gave me a huge hug and went “I’ll see you later,” and then walked up to the dorms.” We both sat there, a little stunned whilst sounds of Rose getting ready in the background drifted over to us like a distant memory from long ago. I was the first to break the silence.

“He said exactly that to you?” Darcy nodded.

“Exactly that,” she replied, turning to me with a now confused expression on her face. “And I’ve now realised that I don’t have a clue what he was saying!” I surveyed her puzzled emerald eyes with sympathy.

“Well,” I said slowly, “correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m thinking that Albus Potter has just admitted that he likes you. A lot.” She looked at me blankly.

“Sorry?” she asked me incredulously. “Al….me….relationship…” I sighed as she trailed off into thought; she was utterly clueless when it came to her love life but then again isn’t everyone? I definitely was, with all these mixed up feelings swirling around my being like a full blown hurricane and without inkling on where to begin on unravelling and making sense of them. So to be honest, when it came down to it, wasn’t I just as confused about my feelings as she was….

At that moment Rose came hurrying over to us, two tops in her hands (one of which was mine!) and a crestfallen look on her face.

“Guuuuys! I need help, like, right now!” I laughed, getting up from the trunk and slithering onto my bed to look at her, eyebrows raised.

“What’s wrong dearest?” Darcy cooed sympathetically, resting her hand on Rose’s lower arm in a maternal sort of way as Rose looked as though she was about to have a mental breakdown any time soon. Rose sighed dramatically.

“I’m stuck on what top to wear for tonight!” she cried, shoving her hands forward into Darcy’s face and causing her to almost topple backwards over the trunk that was now behind her. As she steadied herself and slid out of harms way Rose turned to me in desperation. “I’m so stuck, Mo; help me, please!” I laughed, swinging my legs around to the front of my body so I was in a sitting position facing her.

“Rose, think about this logically. What colour nails have you got?” She examined her left hand quickly.

“Hot pink,” she replied.

“And what colour is the top in your right hand?” I persisted. She looked at the garment she was holding. She looked at me, her mouth formed in a tiny ‘o’ shape. I shook my head at her. “Anytime airhead!” I said, rolling over onto my back as Rose slipped on the top and Darcy began pulling clothes out of her wardrobe and laying them carefully out on her bed. As Rose’s head popped out the top of her top she caught sight of the clothes, and she frowned slightly.

“Are you wearing *that* skirt to the party?” she asked pointedly. Darcy looked up, confused.

“What’re you talking about?” Rose walked over to Darcy’s bed and picked up a knee length dark brown skirt made of what I made out to be tweed. Oh dear.

“This!” Rose persisted, looking down at the skirt in obvious anxiety. Darcy shrugged, glancing over in my direction nervously.

“Well…er…yeah, I s’pose-” Rose cut in.

“Darling, if you want to get anywhere with my cousin, then looking the part is a MUST! And this, I’m sorry to say, isn’t!” she said matter-of-factly. Darcy frowned at her.

“I don’t want to get anywhere with-”

“Just because I was in a state when you and Morgan were talking doesn’t mean that my hearing was affected miss!” Rose replied, slinging her hip and arching her eyebrow. I grinned; Rose was renowned for having incredible hearing! Darcy shuffled her feet anxiously, going slightly pink.

“Well, what can else can I wear then?” she asked Rose helplessly. Rose smirked at her before glancing at me; I knew what she was thinking.

“Leave this to us, Darce,” I answered her, rolling off my bed and reaching for my wand as Rose manoeuvred her swiftly into the bathroom.

.:~ ½ an hour later ~:.

“Okay, how long is this going to take? Al’s probably waiting for us as I speak!” Darcy snapped impatiently as gave my wand a final flick around her hair.

“All the more reason for you to be looking your most beautiful my darling!” Rose replied, walking towards her with a gold belt resting gracefully in her hands.

“Which you now are, for I am now done!” I added excitedly, balancing my wand on the sink as I clapped my hands, making the waves now tumbling down her back glow gold before returning to their normal colour except now a lot glossier! Darcy shuffled nervously again as Rose clipped the belt around her hips and rotated her shoulders backwards, as though shaking out her anxieties.

“Put these in,” Rose said curtly, handing her a pair of shiny gold hoops. Darcy took them from her and, with a little difficulty, fixed them into her earlobes. “Ladies,” Rose announced proudly, stepping back to admire her handiwork, “My work here is done! One thing that I know for certain is that poor Albus won’t be able to resist you when he sees you!” Darcy gave a cheeky little smile as Rose and I both laughed.

“Right!” I said, picking up my blue cardigan and putting it on. “Let’s go crash this party!” Rose and Darcy laughed again and together we exited the dormitory and finally made our way down the spiral staircase to the common room where Al and Alex Patterson were waiting for us (Alex was still having detentions with McGonagall for two more reoccurrences of the dung bomb and Mrs Norris incident so he was going with us).

“Ready boys?” Rose asked excitedly, bounding through the door to the common room and approaching the boys. Alex gaped openly at Rose, much to the amusement of Al.

“We’ve been ready for the past half an hour; what were you doing up there…” he trailed off as he caught sight of Darcy, who had been the last to enter the common room and was now standing there as though she had some sort of brand spanking new alter-ego, even though it didn’t permit her to speak from nerves. Right on que Al’s jaw dropped to the floor as he took in her appearance. Rose and I exchanged satisfied glances; phase one of the transformation had gone without a hitch! Finally Darcy found her voice.

“Sh-shall we go th-then? It’s going to take us ten minutes to get there anyway so we’d better get going!” Walking over to the portrait hole, she pushed it open and carefully, so she wouldn’t fall flat on her face, entered the already dark corridor on the other side, followed by Rose and Alex (who was still drooling!) whilst Al and I brought up the rear.

“What’s up with her?” Al asked me quietly nodding ahead of him in Rose’s direction. “Any particular reason why she looks a cat who’s got the cream?”

“Three words,” I murmured back, “Quidditch boys party!” Al sniggered as I looked ahead of the pair in front of us to Darcy. It was almost as if the change of clothes had changed the way she felt about herself; her head was held high, hair bouncing electrically down her back as she walked. I glanced at Al who was also watching her intently with a wistful look in his emerald eyes. “Darcy looks good tonight doesn’t she?” I slid in casually whilst inspecting my nails with great interest. There was a long pause. I glanced to my left frowning. “Al?” He sighed with a look of slight despair on his face flickering in the torchlight of the corridor.

“Not just good; she looks beautiful,” he replied softly. After a pause he looked at me, the despair now more evident and pronounced. “Too beautiful to ever like me.” I stopped dead in my tracks, gaping at him.

“I’m sorry, I must be going mad; I swear I just heard you say that she’d never like you?!” Al came to a halt also, frowning at me and looking blatantly confused.

“What d’you mean?” he asked, but before I could answer I was cut off by Rose.

“Come ON you bl.oody cleansweeps, we’re almost there!” she called back to us as her and Alex rounded a corner and Al continued to stare at me as though he were trying to figure me out. I sighed.

“Boys! You really need everything to be spelled out to you don’t you?!” Throwing my hands up into the air, frustrated, I strode off to catch up with the others.

“But-” he started.

“I’ll let you figure it out Albus Potter!” I butted in as I rounded the corner, disappearing from his view and almost colliding with Rose, Darcy and Alex who had now congregated in that exact spot. As I looked about me, my stomach, for some perfectly obvious reason, erupted into butterflies.
